Gulnara worked through the bag steadily and offered us an apricot every fifteen minutes with the exact same gesture, as though generosity should not draw attention to itself.

At the checkpoint a soldier took the passports into a hut and returned after eleven minutes without having opened either one. “He is bored, not important,” she translated. Useful taxonomy.

The road kept its own counsel. The notebook gained a name, a sister’s address in Bukhara, and the first clean consent note of the week.
